A Letter from Lindy
Hello Pilgrims,
It is good to be back on terra firma from the peninsula of hurricanes. Truthfully, although a CAT 2 as it moved through Orlando, Milton did not wreak as much damage there as it could have. Certainly both coast suffered the wrath of both hurricane and tornado. My heart hurts for all of the communities impacted by Milton’s path.
With Milton still in my rearview, I was grateful to read about our Board of Christian Service’s Bucket effort this Sunday. I hope many of you will pitch in to put together the much needed hygiene and clean up items so we can deliver them to be sent to our neighbors in need.
Our Sunday is full of opportunities to bear witness as part of God’s arc of justice as we will move from bucket brigade to community action, gathering with folks from across the state to hold the candidates seeking to represent us accountable. We come together with other North Carolina IAF organizations seeking commitments from the governor elect, state’s attorney elect, and superintendent for public instruction. If you are interested in joining the 25 Pilgrims who have committed to representing our beloved community, please contact Lynn League or Tom Harris.
Finally, I want to make you aware of another way in which we have offered aid our neighbors in the western reaches of our state. Many of you know of our historic ties with Christmount, a Disciples of Christ retreat center on Black Mountain. They too suffered significant damage from the ravages of Helene. As they were scheduled to host our yearly gathering the last weekend in October, which has now been canceled, we thought it important to respond to their need.
The church council has approved directing our $650 deposit, along with the generous donation of Pilgrim’s retreatants’ room cost, toward their recovery efforts, totaling $1600. As we respond with our Neighbors in Need special offering, our bucket assembly, to donation to a specific friend of Pilgrim’s adds to our effort.
I love the ways in which God is moving through us to respond to the needs of our neighbors. Grateful to be a part of this community.
