A Letter from Lindy April 23

Oh what a glorious day, Pilgrims,

as I look longingly out my office window at the blanket of green that surrounds our campus. I so want to be outside in sun-drenched creation! Without question, I love our front forest! My heart rate always settles as I turn onto our property.

(and I still want goats to do a little weed eating ;)

What a perfect setting to celebrate Earth Day Sunday this weekend. Not only honoring the gift of Creation, but calling all created beings to share in God’s invitation to steward that which has been entrusted to our care. I look forward to sharing in that conversation with you.

I also ask you to mark your calendars for Sunday, April 30 at 6pm to join me at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church for the Refounding of  Durham CAN (Congregations, Associations & Neighborhoods) Refounding. We have spent considerable thought and energy discussing the impact of the pandemic on the church – how to step beyond and grow from it. Covid’s wallop has not been limited to the religious landscape. Every organization seems to be emerging from its entrails. And those who serve, advocate and agitate on our behalf to help Durham become a more equitable city stand at the intersectionality of all our reverberations. We need to remember. We need to recommit. We need to reclaim our power to usher in God’s justice and peace among God’s people of Durham.

We influenced CAN’s priorities (Poverty, Affordable Housing, Gun Violence and Transportation). As residents of Durham, we not only bear witness daily to the need for change in our city, but we are also called to participate in ushering change in. We know from our own journey of emerging, it takes us stepping out and up and in to restart the beat of an organization’s heart. Your pastor and CAN Core Team have been faithfully part of CAN’s defibrillating, and now we need a bigger team in the operating theater. Won’t you join us? We’ve pledged 15 Pilgrims to step out. Up. In. With a stretch goal of 20. I’d love to surpass that number.

Join us to learn about upcoming actions that will help make Durham accessible and equitable for all!
