Policy violence
Pilgrim Auxiliary and church members met in person and on Zoom on November 8, to hear Durham activist and fair housing specialist, Stella Adams. Ms. Adams gave a brief but powerful history of Durham that showed how policies that seem simple and easy to implement often ended up punishing historic and often poorer communities. Her examples include the tree canopy project of 1937, failure to expand curbs and sidewalks into Braggtown and Walltown among other communities, and the splitting of the Hayti community by Interstate 147.
