A Letter from Lindy

Pilgrims,
Our hearts hurt so through the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic, as we tragically mark today its 100,000 death in the United States. How might we lament for each and every life lost?

As this pandemic overwhelms, there is yet another raging—one we cannot not see in the desperate, gasping plea “I cannot breathe.” Pilgrim, we cannot look away. We cannot not lend our voice. We cannot not act if we are beloved community held in and by Jesus’ prayer for us to be one.

We will never be one until and unless there is justice with/for our brothers and sisters of color. Both pandemics unmask evil and reveal God’s truth. And this truth is hard to bear. My belief is that it will equally be hard to breathe in and through this truth. As theologian, Rev. Anna Blaedel, challenges to “those of us who are white have an urgent responsibility to sit with, and face, these truths. They are truths white people must confront, and tell, and disrupt, and unlearn, and undo. They are truths only white people have the privilege to ignore.” Especially, especially, white people of faith.

“Judgement,” reminds Christy Road, “is when humanity asks one another: Who follows through on the lessons we should have already learned?”

How will we live into this, our, urgent responsibility, Pilgrim?

I hope together.
