A Letter from Lindy May 10

Pilgrims,
Last week, in the "Sunday links" section, I asked a series of questions to help shape our path forward. I confused many with my lack of clarity. My apology. The links were for Sunday's materials, not for a "survey" of questions. I was hoping for a free form answering of the following questions.... on how you experience worship these days.

Do you join us for Sunday worship? Why? Why not?
What makes you feel  most connected?
Do you stay online to participate in Communion?
Do you join Fellowship Hour?
Do you sing along with the hymns?
Do you participate in the responsive readings?
Do you send in Prayers of the People?
What other ideas might help you feel more connected to each other/to Pilgrim as beloved community?

Some of you took measure of our services to date and gave me thoughtful reflection. Thank you. Some searched for the survey that did not exist. My apology. Some told me where they are at. I am humbled with your trust.

These questions will help inform our future as we begin moving into a phased re-opening of our community, state, world. We know a few facts to guide us. Phasingin will be a slow process. Perhaps even start. stop. go back. We are also paying attention to the potential length of alternative practices--12-18 months, according to scientists and medical professionals.

We know we will not be back in sanctuary worshiping as a collective "body" for some time, at least not more than 10 people. Then perhaps 20. And so on. There will also not be a "going back" to the way things have always been. The pandemic demands we look carefully at practices that could unwittingly transmit the virus to each other. The common cup of intinction. The sharing of the same loaf of bread. The passing of the peace. The choir singing shoulder to shoulder. Packed pews. All of these need reconsideration.

Holding these truths before us, joining together virtually will be part of our ministry for some time, may even be a part of us permanently. Wherever you find yourself, it would be helpful to learn what you are thinking. Please email, call or zoom with Pastor Lindy to help us grow in our new reality, if you feel comfortable.

If that feels arduous, in short order you will be receiving a letter and survey from Pilgrim's church council, under the leadership of our moderator. We have been talking about our future almost daily. We want to hear from you, so that whatever decisions we make, it is as beloved community, listening to and hearing all of our beautiful voices together.

Peace, Pastor Lindy
