Letter from Lindy March 24
Our Lenten series has grown from 40+ the first week, to topping over 60+ last night. What an important learning experience in this moment. I was so grateful for Imam Waheed’s thoughts about how we might stand together in the aftermath of the Christchurch tragedy, to push against hate and witness to love. I left holding onto his words that what we are doing right now, being in conversation with each other, even against those who might disapprove and/or be angry at such coming together, as my Lenten guiding light. I hope you did as well. My prayer is that we continue with this level of commitment for the final three sessions, as the Imam’s parting words were of gratitude for this demonstrable show of solidarity and support from Pilgrim.
It will also be s worthwhile conversation, post Lent, to explore together the Imam’s understanding and belief that the many Christian traditions share a connected, uniform, theology. Connected perhaps, but the theological gradations of what we believe about God are potentially as vast as the stars in the sky. Hyperbole for sure. But I wonder, as he connected the six tenets of his faith to the Christian tradition, how you heard and received his understanding and interpretation. Our time with the Imam serves as an excellent prompt to equip us to be in such conversations.
How wonderfully appropriate for the season in which we journey.
